Penguin Pebbles

Look at my things!

I have always loved making things. As a kid it was bracelets made from hemp cord, paper mache and origami hats from newspaper, or model rockets and picture frames with my dad. Growing up my dad was always building or fixing something while my mom was sewing, crafting, or scrapbooking. Both of them have a heavy DIY instinct. I have always paused before calling myself an artist but I have never shyed away from the label of maker.

Here are some things I have made! Look! Look!

Orb Planter - Pink Panther Plant 3d modeled in fusion360 - printed in pla

Look! Look! This planter has been in my mind for a while. I am excited to have a first iteration that looks so cute! I started with an idea for size, something that would fit in the palm of my hand. I decided on 100mm (~4 inches) for the orb width and 75mm (~2.75inches) for its height. I pictured the planter cradling the plant and directing it to spill out the front. This plant hates to have wet leaves, so adequate drainage holes are available on the bottom and the drip tray holds enough water for a single pour to saturate the soil from below. (Well... that is the idea anyway!) I am pleased to show off the Orb Planter! I think it looks a little like a spaceship!

Sidenote: Went to Kesha with my girlfriend, K!, on Saturday. What a concert! I listened all week leading up to the show and I am still lingering on her music. Spaceship is a beautiful song and Rainbow is an incredible album. I highly reccomend giving it a listen. While I was potting this plant, I kept singing, "I'm waiting for my spaceship to come back for me, it's coming back for me, I dont really care if you believe it's coming back for me." Beautiful and melancholic. And catchy! Pop music! To think, I used to turn up my nose at the pop music on the radio. Some of my favorite artists of the last 5 years have fallen under the category. It took me too long to realize that we like what we like and there is no use in pretending otherwise. What a waste of time! Give me all of that Dua Lipa, Sabrina Carpenter, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan, and Olivia Rodrigo!

Diamond Kite - Priority mail envelope, bamboo skewers, packing tape

As winter is on the way out, kites have been floating into my mind with the wind. I picked up a couple of priority mail envelopes (free!) and made the biggest diamond kite I could with one of them. Skewers from the cabinet and packing tape to hold it together. I love this site for kite making: MBK - My Best Kites. There is a treasure trove of information on making kites of all sorts. This one is the simple diamond. It came together in under an hour and was flying well (if not a bit erratic) in a turbulent wind. The test flight was in the side yard just before some rain; there was not a lot of room to let the line out! Very cute kite and it flies surprisingly well! I have a couple more envelopes, check back for another project made from them!
